October is National Safe Work Month

October is National Safe Work Month, which aims to raise awareness of health and safety at work, and to encourage discussion about safe work practices.

The theme of this years campaign is “sharing safety knowledge and experience benefits everyone.” The idea is for people to share the things they do, both big and small, that make their workplace safer and healthier.

Work related injury and disease costs the Australian community about $61.8 billion a year. This figure has declined over the years, but there is still plenty of work to be done to bring that figure down further.

As the campaign acknowledges, no industry should be unsafe to work in and no death or injury at work is acceptable. Given the whole community bears the financial cost of poor work health safety, we know that safe and healthy workplaces are a benefit to everyone.

This is why, during October each year, the campaign asks workers and employers across Australia to commit to building safe and healthy workplaces for all Australians.
