  • Compensation for victims of crime.

While it has been operating under various guises, the Stringer Clark office in Portland has been a part of the local community for over 100 years.

The modern Stringer Clark office is a substantial professional business, staffed by local people who are aware of what is important to the people of Portland.

John Cramp heads up the office, himself a local of 15 years after marrying into a local family. He has two active children who participate in the Portland Little Athletics Club, of which he is Vice President.

'Portland is a great area in which to live and to bring up children," John says. " In fact, it's also good if you happen to be a big kid like me and jump on a surfboard from time to time."

The practice offers expert advice on all types of injury and accident compensation, covering workplace injuries, farm accidents and the many types of road accidents. According to John, the roads in the Portland area are in a terrible condition and their poor state of repair is a contributing factor in many car and bike accidents in the region.

According to John, many farmers who are injured on their tractors don't realise that they are covered for medical and other compensation benefits by the TAC compulsory insurance scheme. "A farmer injured on the land, driving his tracto,r for example, does not have to make a claim on his workers compensation insurance," says John. "He is entitled to help from the TAC."

One of the main problems faced by locals who are injured is the Melbourne-centric nature of many of the medical services that are provided through WorkCover and the TAC. All initial examinations to ascertain the injury type are conducted in Melbourne, which requires an onerous journey of many hours for which, until recently, a client was only reimbursed at the rate of 26 cents per hour for car travel. Partly as a result of lobbying by Stringer Clark, that allowance was recently raised to 30 cents. "But even then, it's insufficient," says John.

"You also find that Melbourne-based insurers schedule appointments for nine o'clock on a Monday morning, unaware of just how early that would require someone to be on the road," he says. "We try to source as many medical appointments as we can locally but it is tough."

Stringer Clark Portland offers a comprehensive range of legal services including: WorkCover claims, TAC claims, public liability claims, family law, conveyancing, Wills & Probate and criminal proceedings.
